Auberoche Castle is located in the town of Fanlac, in the Dordogne, 9 km west of Montignac-Lascaux.
Located to the south of the village, the estate dates from the 14th century. It retains from this feudal period a surrounding wall with circular towers at the corners. It must once have supported a walkway as evidenced by corbels (stone supports protruding).
Stronghold of the lords of La Bermondie and then of the Durand de Batid family, the estate was modernized in the 17th century with the construction in the inner courtyard of a classically-built dwelling with two wings at right angles. We observe that a terraced garden gives access to the house, which has two doors with pilasters and pediment, one with scrolls, the other triangular. Inside, a grand staircase with a square plan and cross vaults has been preserved. The exterior sculpted decorations are typical of the classical style under Louis XIII (especially at the level of the portal or the windows framed by pilasters, etc.).
Listed in the Inventory, the castle is still private property and is not open to the public.
This beautiful example of classical architecture in Périgord can nevertheless mark out a walk in the bucolic countryside neighboring the village where a fortified Romanesque church has been preserved.
