Built in 1785 by the lord of Épône Marie-Jean Hérault de Séchelles, friend of King Louis XVI, to commemorate the very young recognition of the United States of America, by France. It is in these places and in the castle of Épône that Hérault de Séchelles, feeling the wind of the revolution coming, befriended Danton, Robespierre, St Just to ultimately write the premises of the 1st French constitution.
In 1958, General De Gaulle asked his Minister of the Interior, Michel Debré, to retire to the countryside to consider a new constitution. Michel Debré, then a friend of Max Brusset, owner of the premises, came with four other ministers to write the constitution of the 5th Republic. We can say that the French Republic was born in Épône.
