Located in the town of Dorat, in Puy-de-Dôme, the Château de Barante was built in the course of the 17th century by the Brugière de Barante family. Rebuilt in the middle of the 19th century following a fire, it was for a time the property of Prosper de Barante, French academician and politician.
The site is particularly recognized for its park of around one hundred hectares which offers a breathtaking view of the valley as well as the neighboring Puys chain. Passing visitors can also appreciate the neo-Romanesque chapel designed by Prosper Mérimée and listed in the supplementary inventory of Historical Monuments or even one of the richest libraries in France composed of more than 60,000 volumes including the original edition of Provincials of Blaise Pascal.
The building is now closed to the public following numerous burglaries.
