Wittschlœssel Castle is located in the commune of Dambach, in the department of Bas-Rhin, 12 km north-east of Niederbronn-les-Bains.
It was erected in the 13th century in the form of a guard tower overlooking the Obersteinbach valley, completing the elements protecting Schœneck Castle (also on Dambach, built around 1250 by Jean de Schoeneck, in the then service des Hohenstaufen and subservient to the Lords of Lichtenberg).
Also belonging to the Lichtenbergs, considered as a fort, the castle of Wittschlœssel was destroyed in 1677.
Only vestiges remain now, on a ridge, at 440 m altitude, in the form of walls made of pink sandstone typical of the Northern Vosges.
These remains, just like the castle in the past, are based directly on the rock in which the beam holes are still visible.
The site protected as historical monuments is freely accessible and marks out a hiking route including this massif (the Wittberg).
