Nicknamed the Little Versailles of Languedoc, the castle of Castries, in the Hérault, was erected in the 16th century on the remains of a first medieval building. Classified as a Historic Monument, it is, with its French garden and its aqueduct, one of the most important monuments in Languedoc-Roussillon.
Transformed in the 17th century, the Renaissance-style building notably unveils a grand staircase and a garden designed by Le Nôtre himself. Looted and confiscated during the French Revolution, the castle of Castries is today the property of the municipality.
Entirely built in local stone, it is currently closed to the public due to major renovations.
