Castle of Blain

Monument in Blain

The Château de la Groulais, or Blain, is located in the town of Blain, in Loire-Atlantique, about thirty kilometers north-west of the Nantes agglomeration.

This fortress, which was part of the set of defensive sites along the "border" between Brittany and the Kingdom of France, was built in the 12th century by the Duke of Brittany Alain Fergent then razed in 1260 after the revolt of Olivier de Clisson, immediately rebuilt. It was remodeled in the 16th century in a Renaissance style.

The estate belonged from 1407 to 1802 to the de Rohan family. During this period, it was set on fire during the Wars of Religion by the Spaniards and then looted during the Revolution. He then served a time as barracks and prison.

From 1918 to 1950, Marie Bonaparte, a wealthy descendant of Napoleon I, member of the royal family of Greece and psychoanalyst, owned the premises and saved the castle from ruin.

In 1973, part of the estate was acquired by the municipality. Another remains private, including the Logis du Roy, which now hosts receptions and seminars.

Formerly composed of several main buildings and twelve towers, amputated by wars and by Richelieu (17th century), the castle, entirely protected as historical monuments, still extends over more than 4 hectares.

In the parts managed by the town, a museum of old printing has been set up (with a workshop and machines from the past and organization of printing, engraving and binding workshops: contact +33 2 40 87 17 53). In addition, an association organizes festive or cultural events (reconstructions in costumes, exhibitions) and guided tours (contact on +33 7 69 49 51 08).
