Established in the town of Banassac-Canilhac, in Lozère, the castle of Montferrand was originally the property of the eponymous counts. Installed on a rocky outcrop at the narrowest point of the Lot valley, the building, now in ruins, was built at the end of the 11th century. Dedicated to the defense of Rouergue and Gévaudan, it passed over the centuries into the hands of the King of Aragon, the Bishop of Mende and then the King of France.
Today in ruins, the building offers a breathtaking view of the river and the hamlet.
