Guide of the Béarn-Basque Country - Tourism, holidays & weekends in the Béarn-Basque Country

If you find it hard to choose between the seaside and the mountains, the Béarn-Pays Basque region will solve your dilemma. It has both beaches and mountains, offering a variety of fun and leisure activities. High above sea level, the Train de la Rhune, a metre gauge rack railway, invites you aboard its wooden carriages to travel around the mountains and enjoy unforgettable views from an altitude of 905 metres.

There are many options for walkers: the paths and lakes of the Ossau Valley, the Aspe Valley near the Spanish border, and the Col d'Aubisque pass with its sublime view of the mountains. The Pyrenees National Park, a major hiking destination, is a vast, unspoilt wilderness boasting a rich and dense ecosystem. At various locations, including Laruns, Cauterets and Arrens-Marsous, information points and displays will complete your outing and add an educational touch.

The mountain-oriented city of Pau, Béarn's capital, offers a majestic castle converted into a museum, and prides itself on its breathtaking views of the Pyrenees range. When it comes to the seaside, several dynamic seaside resorts vie to be the star. Visitors have a choice between the elegant villas and unspoilt coast of Biarritz, the remarkable built heritage and sandy beach of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, or the festive and vibrant Bayonne. The latter, a City of Art and History with its remarkable historical centre and Basque Museum, offers many places to visit.

Béarn-Pays Basque is also a land of epicureans and food-lovers. With garbure and piperade, Bayonne ham and Espelette pepper, Ossau-Iraty cheese and Jurançon wine, gourmets are in for a treat.
