Additional information
Vincennes

Not far from Paris, Vincennes takes shape next to the eponymous wood. It is a dynamic city full of history that opens its doors to you. And the story begins in the twelfth century when Louis VII chose the wood of Vincennes as a hunting ground. He then undertakes to build a hunting lodge which will become the castle. In 1373, he ordered the construction of a low court intended to house his servants. It was not until 1787 that the commune was recognized as such. But the territory of Vincennes is narrow and the inhabitants demand an extension of their land. This was done during the Revolution when the commune was enlarged by 238 hectares and then by an additional 94 hectares in the neighboring communes in 1829. Vincennes was born and Vincennes soon became an important city thanks to a demographic increase due to the presence Large military barracks in the woods and the castle and the arrival of railway infrastructure. City of art and history, Vincennes can be visited as one leafs through a history book.

Things to see and do

The tour begins with the castle of Vincennes. It is not a simple castle, but a complete medieval complex. Indeed, from the simple hunting lodge of Louis VII, the castle took on its fullness over the centuries. It was at first Saint-Louis that replaced the pavilion by an imposing manor, then Charles V which adds a dungeon of more than 50 meters high, towers and a fortified enclosure. Throughout history, the building also has a chapel. It is this historic complex of rare architectural beauty that you will have the opportunity to visit. It is necessary to specify that the castle is classified with the Historical Monuments, like the town hall and the church Saint-Louis. The town hall is a remarkable example of the marriage of genres and eras. Built in 1847, it has a neo-classical façade while its interior, reworked in the 1930s, is of Art Deco style. The Saint-Louis church, on the other hand, is a masterpiece of originality. His work, begun in 1914, was interrupted by the First World War. In fact, it was not finished until 1924. It is a neo-Byzantine style and an example of the revival of sacred art of the early twentieth century.

Let's walk in the woods... The wood of Vincennes invites you to relax. This beautiful place can be discovered by bike, by boat or on the back of pony. But if you prefer walking, it is possible too. True green lung a few minutes from the city, the wood offers many activities and spaces of relaxation in the middle of a landscaped nature.
