Nestling on the banks of the Seine, the pretty village of Villequier, where you will find the Victor Hugo Museum, is one of the stops along the Historic Writers' Houses Route.

Based in the Vacquerie family home where Victor Hugo stayed many times, this place steeped in history shares memories of the illustrious novelist's family. It was here that a terrible tragedy was to mark Victor Hugo's life forever: on 4 September 1843, his daughter Léopoldine and her husband Charles Vacquerie, as well as an uncle and a nephew, drowned during a boat trip on the Seine. Devastated by the passing of his eldest daughter, he paid tribute to her with "Tomorrow, at Dawn..." ("Demain dès l'aube..."), one of his most famous poems.

With many documents, drawings, letters and photos, the museum offers an immersion in the everyday lives of the Vacquerie and Hugo families, in the various furnished rooms of this large and impressive house.
