Very popular with lovers of fishing and canoe-kayaking, the River Vézère has its source on the Millevaches plateau in Corrèze, and digs deep gorges in the granite of the Massif Central, before winding into a broad valley after passing Brive, all the way to the Dordogne.

In the gorges between Vigeois and Allassac, the river is a great place for a wonderful encounter with nature and outdoor activities like river sports, mountain biking and rock climbing. Yet hiking is the way to really appreciate the beauty of the Vézère gorges site at your own pace: the GR46 for example, starting at Le Saillant, will offer you superb viewpoints on the way up to Vigeois via the site of La Roche and Comborn. The belvederes and orientation tables will enable you to enjoy a well-earned break and take photos of some magnificent landscapes! At 391 metres above sea level, the site of La Roche and its orientation table, accessible via a pleasant path lined by ferns, oaks and chestnut trees, will reveal a superb panoramic view of verdant gorges, the hydroelectric dam of Le Saillant and the Yssandonnais.

At Le Saillant, lovers of old buildings won't want to miss the beautiful medieval bridge with six ogival arches. This charming little village on the banks of the Vézère is also renowned for its Chapel of Our Lady, which houses six stained glass windows by the famous artist Marc Chagall!
