Located at the north-eastern end of Tarn-et-Garonne, on the border between the departments of Tarn and Aveyron, the charming village of Varen has kept a fine architectural heritage from its past as a deanery. Reminders include the 11th-century Romanesque church, the 15th-century castle, once the home of the lord dean and today the headquarters of the town council, the fortified door with its machicolation and the rows of pretty houses that make for a pleasant stroll. A mediaeval garden opposite the castle further adds to the charm of the place.

Additional information
Varen

Fortified village of Tarn-et-Garonne, on the borders of Tarn and Aveyron, Varen takes place sixty kilometers from Montauban and forty of Albi. It reveals a large part of agricultural land as well as a rich architectural heritage, inheritance of its former deanery past.

Founded in the ninth century by the county Géraud d'Aurillac, the deanery of Varen knows over the centuries a rich and striking history. In 1573, the town was stormed by the Protestants of Saint-Antonin in response to the massacre of St. Bartholomew.

Even today, visitors appreciate the special charm of this small village in the south of France, as well as its ideal proximity to some of the most beautiful villages in the area. Varen is an excellent resort to enjoy the appeal of the three departments.

Things to see and do

Romanesque style, the church of St. Peter was built in the eleventh century. Integrated in the defensive system of the town, its facade was once used as a wall. Classified as a Historical Monument, it presents a vessel of pure Romanesque style and a choir decorated with capitals with plant motifs or animals. One can also admire cherubim framing a tree of life and stalls of the seventeenth century.

Walking through this ancient fortified village, it is also possible to enjoy a 15th century castle or an old gate that once belonged to the fortifications and reinforced by a machicolated bretèche in 1621. The site also has beautiful half-timbered houses, and the castle of Pechrodil will seduce you with its exteriors of the seventeenth century.

Appreciated by locals and passing visitors alike, the three-kilometer stretch of water is ideal for fishing, boating or family outings.

Built in the course of the twelfth century, the church of St. Martin Arnac has the distinction of presenting two steeples.

Do not miss the Lexos station built on the model of Austerlitz in Paris in the mid-19th century. It is the work of the Compagnie des Chemins de Fers d'Orleans.
