At the foot of the Monédières massif in the middle of the Millevaches Regional Nature Park in Limousin, be sure to pay a visit to Treignac, a pretty medieval town with old houses located on the Way of St. James. To start exploring Treignac, head to the banks of the Vézère, where you will find a beautiful view of the old 13th-century bridge, the Gothic Church of Our Lady of the Bans and the houses in the lower town! Your tour of this charming spot in Corrèze then continues in the upper town. Take the time to enjoy a walk along its narrow streets to discover old houses with turrets and beautiful monuments like the medieval grain hall, the 13th-century Chabirande gate, the 17th-century Chapel of the Penitents or the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace and its elegant twisted bell tower. So go up to the top of the old belvedere tower, you'll have a superb view over the slate roofs of the town from there!
The arts and popular traditions of Upper Vézère have their own museum, based in a 16th-century residence that used to belong to Marc Sangnier, the founder of the French youth hostel network Auberges de Jeunesse. Old regional furniture, as well as agricultural, craft and forester's tools, displayed on three floors, are among the memorabilia that tells visitors about how daily life used to be for the locals.
Want to enjoy a pleasant moment of relaxation surrounded by greenery? Don't miss Lake Bariousses, a lovely expanse of water spanning 99 hectares, located three kilometres north of Treignac! As well as sunbathing on its sandy beach, at this site you can enjoy outdoor pursuits like swimming, fishing, canoe-kayak, sailing, pedalo and stand up paddle.
Through narrow streets you will discover the fiefdom of the Vicomte de Comborn; The 13th century old bridge, the numerous shell houses, the 12th century grain hall next to the chapel of Notre-Dame de la Paix (bell tower with a listed roof), the chapel of the Penitents (17th century), l The parish church (15th century), the Chabirande gate and the old medieval streets. Fountains and chapels will lead you to the "Belvedere" tower from which you can admire the panorama of the old town.
At the start of the Tourist Office, the heritage circuit, marked with numbered panels, allows you to discover the history of Treignac with its built heritage (the old bridge, Notre-Dame des Bans church, Bell tower, small couriers, the market hall, the tower...). Guided tours are also offered by the Tourist Office. For children: booklet games "a little tour with Treignou" available free of charge at the Tourist Office.
The Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions, housed in a remarkable 18th century house, contains tools, furniture, utensils... which retrace the family and professional life of the ancestors of Correze. Open in July and August, by reservation the rest of the year.
The Borzeix Besse chocolate factory, with the store open Tuesday to Sunday morning, avenue Léon Vacher. To visit, the "Comptoir du Chocolat" from April to October, from Wednesday to Sunday, visit-tasting at 15h and by reservation for groups.
