A Town of Art and History on the banks of the Garonne, La Réole invites you to discover its heritage and historical monuments. Dating from the 18th century, the Benedictine priory, which now houses the administrative services of the town hall, has some magnificent listed ironwork such as the cloister railings and the staircase banisters, which were made by the ironworker Blaise Charlut.

Close to the old monastery stands another of the town's iconic buildings: the 13th-century castle of Quat'Sos, of which three imposing towers remain. The remains of the walls that dot the city also bear witness to the medieval past of La Réole. The former Benedictine priory church, St. Peter's, built in the 12th and 17th centuries, still retains a Gothic portal, a Romanesque apse and a spacious nave.

Then head towards the old town hall, located between Place Richard Coeur de Lion and the Place des Martyrs de la Résistance. Dating from the 12th century, this civil building, which was erected at the request of Richard the Lionheart, is one of the oldest in France! La Réole also has cobbled streets and half-timbered houses that can be admired on a stroll...

Additional information
La Réole

The town takes place on both banks of the Garonne. Real balcony over the river, La Réole has preserved a heritage of exceptional richness stretching from antiquity to the present day. The city is fortified on a hill on the banks of the Garonne. It grows in a first time thanks to the richness of the priory and that of the bourgeoisie who can enjoy the clashes between the Plantagenets and the Capetians during the period of the Anglo-Gascon Aquitaine. Following the Wars of Religion, the Benedictine priory rebuilt by seeking the best craftsmen of their time including ironworkers of La Réole, renowned throughout Aquitaine. Essentially rural La Réole situated on the borders of the Gironde, on the edge of Lot-et-Garonne.

Continue the heritage and develop a strong policy development and mediation of heritage and quality of life commitment are the objectives of the City La Réole including assuming the label "historical cities".
