The fourth biggest town in Alsace, Haguenau has plenty to appeal to visitors. Its surprising Luggage Museum has a collection that's unique in Europe, with nearly 600 travel-related objects restored by a couple of enthusiasts. The Alsatian Museum, based in the old medieval chancellery, exhibits many useful and decorative objects documenting Alsace's way of life and traditions since the 19th century: recreations of pottery workshops, an ancestral peasant home, traditional costumes, folk imagery... In a Neo-Renaissance building, the Historical Museum tells the story of Haguenau and the region through collections dating back to Prehistory.
In the historic centre, the Church of St. George, dating from the 12th century and a listed historic monument since 1848, was begun in the Romanesque style and completed in the Gothic style. Right next to it, the floral fountain is a beautiful addition to the square. In the Gothic Church of St. Nicholas, you can admire 18th-century carved wood panelling from the former monastery of Neubourg Abbey and a group of four Baroque statues adorning the entrance to the choir.
The natural heritage is on a par with the cultural and historical heritage. The Blumengarten itinerary, in the Undivided Forest of Haguenau, a certified Exceptional Forest (Forêt d'exception), helps visitors to discover some unique trees. This immense forest is made up of various species such as pine, oak, beech and birch.
