Described by the writer Jean Giono as "Verdon's romantic oasis", the pleasant spa and health resort of Gréoux-les-Bains, situated in Verdon Regional Nature Park (Parc Naturel Régional du Verdon), is famous for the beneficial, healing properties of its water. The Thermes Troglodytes thermal baths, located next to a large shady park, offers medical treatments, as well as fitness and relaxation programmes.

But Gréoux-les-Bains is also a picturesque old village dominated by the imposing Château des Templars where regular art exhibitions and, in summer, shows are put on.

Additional information
Gréoux-les-Bains

Ideally located between the Alps and the Sea, the Verdon and the Luberon, Gréoux-les-Bains knows the sweet life and tourist attractions. City spa long, it combines dynamism and know-how.

Things to see and do

The perched village with picturesque streets has a charming postcard look. At the option of a stroll, we will notice some vestiges of the old ramparts.

But it is first the castle wrongly attributed to the Knights Templar, whose oldest bases date back to the twelfth century, which dominates the city, which is the starting point of a heritage discovery tour. Classified Historical Monument since 1840, the building with the imposing silhouette belonged to the counts of Provence then to the order of the Hospitallers of Saint-Jean of Jerusalem. Now owned by the town, it is composed of an enclosure with a round tower and a square dungeon closing a courtyard. The castle is the subject of a long-lasting restoration campaign and hosts open-air shows in the summer season, as well as exhibitions in public halls.

Other architectural evidence is to be seen: the castle of Rousset, in particular, which dominates the Durance, on the other slope of the locality, dating from the 15th and 17th centuries, restored at the end of the 19th century and which houses classified works, like a 15th century Pietà and a painting by Philippe de Champaigne in his 17th century chapel. It is now home to an important wine estate. Information on +33 4 92 72 62 49.

In the historic heart of the city again, in addition to old houses prior to the Revolution and colorful facades, we will visit with interest the church Notre-Dame-des-Ormeaux, formerly in the center of a priory. If the tower tower dates from 1830, the building contains elements of the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and was restored in the 1970s. Its Gothic choir, the many works of art it houses (an "Assumption" Jacques Macadré, a painting by Honoré Morenon and a splendid altarpiece, all from the 17th century) are remarkable.

On the left bank of the Verdon (the historic village is located on the right bank), the hamlet of Aurafrède, to see also, the amazing chapel Notre-Dame-des-Eggs (built in the seventeenth century on bases of the tenth century, and partly restored in 1960): married women once came on pilgrimage to prevent infertility and, as an ex-voto, placed eggs in the niches of the choir.

Then place at the famous baths that made the celebrity of the locality. Once troglodytes, now housed in a contemporary building with an antique style, they are appreciated by guests for their hot waters that treat rheumatism and respiratory diseases. The site also offers wellness facilities (spa), and has a nice park. Information on +33 4 92 70 40 00.

As is traditional in the hot springs, Gréoux-les-Bains has a casino. It has been converted into an old mansion, the Villa of Jars. Outside the games, shows are scheduled. Information on +33 4 92 78 00 00.

Regarding leisure and culture again, the cinema "Ecociné Verdon" is classified Art and Essay and offers in addition to its usual programming screenings in exclusivity of the movie "Verdon Secret" which allows to discover in a spectacular way the canyon of the Verdon. The cinema is housed in the congress center where shows (theater, dance, concerts) are also organized. Information on +33 4 92 79 82 18.

In addition to the media library where animations (literary workshops, meetings of authors, readings) are proposed (information at +33 4 92 70 48 20), Gréoux-les-Bains has two museums in one...

The first is devoted to "Stained Glass and Crafts". In addition to collections of works and models, introductory courses in the art of stained glass, mosaic or sculpture are proposed. Open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and every day for groups. Price: 6 and 7.50 euros. Information on +33 6 84 62 71 23.

Founded in 2001, the museum of dolls, miniatures and toys of the world is a pleasure for the whole family. The collections present real works of art while inviting to a "journey in the imagination". Open from April to October on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Price: 6 and 7.50 euros. Contact at +33 6 84 62 71 23.

In terms of sports and "nature" recreation, the town is also very rich.

In the park of the castle of Laval and its 20 wooded hectares, the Canyon Park proposes in particular accrobranches courses. Information on +33 6 75 22 39 89.

To combine relaxation and swimming, the pool Colombier is open from June to September and has shaded areas outside. Price: 2.60 and 3.60 euros. Information on +33 4 92 78 19 33.

For a game of tennis, you must reserve a court with the local club at +33 4 92 75 41 95. We will not forget the BMX track for the intrepid bike... Join +33 6 29 84 37 27.

On the banks of the Verdon, the municipality has also developed a multi-use track accessible to two-wheelers and people with reduced mobility, in a green landscape, and a fitness area outdoors.

The hilly and green areas of the town whose territory is vast of nearly 70 km ² without counting its immediate surroundings (gorges of the Verdon, lakes) are finally a paradise for the amateurs of excursions. Note that circuits dedicated to families in a playful way have been developed (the Randoland). Courses also include exceptional natural sites such as the caves of San Sebastián.
