The 18th-century Château de Nohant in the charming village of Nohant near Nohant-Vic is where George Sand, the famous French author of The Devil's Pool, spent her childhood and various key moments of her life. Visitors can take an intimate tour of this manor house steeped in the memory of the Dupin family and see the drawing room and dining room where past guests included renowned composers and literary figures like Balzac, Chopin, Delacroix, Flaubert and Liszt. Furniture, family souvenirs and belongings and a puppet exhibition are on display.

Surrounding the house is a lovely 6-hectare garden boasting "Remarkable Garden" status, with a wonderful rose garden, meadow orchard, flower garden, kitchen garden and wooded park.

George Sand's grave lies close to the garden in the family cemetery.

Every June and July, the estate hosts Nohant festival, a leading musical event dedicated to the Romantic period.

George Sand's house

George Sand and Alexandre Manceau Gargilesse discovered in 1857. This small village will be an idyllic retreat to come relax, work and play (chasing butterflies, herborizing, walks...). This is immediately hooked!

With Manceau, she becomes the owner of a small house that she will name "Villa Algira" the name of an African butterfly found in Gargilesse. From 1857 to 1864 it will find refuge in this romantic inspiration for some of his novels: "I have never worked with as much pleasure as Gargilesse" (GS).

Visitors today can admire documents, family heirlooms and drawings by Maurice Sand deposited there by Aurore Sand who restored this house museum after the atmosphere of the tales of his grandmother.
