Once a land of passage and a strategic axis on the border between Champagne and Picardy, Thiérache was invaded many times during its history. To take refuge and protect themselves from plunderers and enemy armies, the inhabitants of Thiérache fortified the churches in their villages by protecting them with keeps, towers, watchtowers and murder-holes.

Nowadays, the fortified church road, a superb circuit through the peaceful hedged farmland of Thiérache, is an opportunity to discover these fortress-style gems of brick and stone, reminders of the wars that took place in the 16th and 17th centuries. Out of the sixty plus fortified churches in Thiérache, some are particularly worth a trip, for example the churches of Burelles, Prisces, Archon, Beaurain, Englancourt, Montcornet, Dohis, Parfondeval, Jeantes, Plomion and Vervins, in the Aisne, those in Aouste, Liart, Prez, Servion in Rouvroy-sur-Audry, and Signy-le-Petit, in the Ardennes!
