South of Saint-Omer, in Pas-de-Calais, a Second World War bunker nearly caused yet another massacre. The Helfaut-Wizernes Dome is a former secret underground base built by the Germans in 1943. It was designed to store V2 rockets to be fired at London. But this never happened as the Allies bombed the site before the German army could do anything with it.
Today, the Helfaut-Wizernes Dome has become a History and Remembrance Centre offering two different circuits: one about secret weapons and another about French people's lives during the occupation. You can also learn more about the site's construction and visit the museum about science in wartime. Lastly, take a seat in the 3D, 360-degree planetarium for a journey through the universe and to the moon.
