City of Art and History situated along the Saône river, Chalon-sur-Saône has a beautiful architectural heritage. The heart of the historic centre is the picturesque Saint-Vincent square, which is dominated by the profile of the cathedral and surrounded by beautiful old timber-framed houses. After strolling around the shopping streets in the old town, walkers should head to the Nicéphore Niépce museum, dedicated to the inventor of photography born in Chalon-sur-Saône and to photography in general. It is home to 6,000 cameras and optical objects, as well as over 3 million images!

Opposite the museum is Saint-Laurent island where you'll find the Tour du Doyenné tower, which offers a beautiful view of the city from the top, and the Hospital, which is home to a magnificent apothecary shop that's open to the public.

Also not to be missed is the Denon museum for its archaeology and fine art collections.

Built on the banks of the Saône there some 3000 years after naval base in antiquity, instead of large fairs during the Middle Ages and trading center for Modern Times and in contemporary times, is today Chalon-sur-Saône sub-prefecture of Saône-et-Loire, the department first city and 2nd economic center in Burgundy. Its booming economy has always been conducive to trade development, makes Chalon shopping window of southern Burgundy!

The city, strong popularity, has hosted many people born or spent at Chalon: Niepce, inventor of photography; Vivant Denon, an artist and diplomat responsible for the organization of museums of France and the Louvre in Napoleon's time; or Emiland Gauthey, a civil engineer roads in the eighteenth century.

Côte Chalonnaise, classified AOC, is pledged rich vineyards whose grapes chardonnay and pinot noir wines give Mercurey, Givry, Rully and Montagny taste so appreciated by specialists.

Chalon is a cultural capital town of art and history with its many tourist attractions: museums Denon and Niepce, who has over two million images and the first camera created; the Espace des Arts; Abattoir (one of six National Centers of Production Street); the National Conservatory of Music and Dance; St. Vincent Cathedral; the exhibition center; without forgetting the rue de Strasbourg, mark all foodies.

Another monument: the Carnival. For nearly a century, is one of the most prestigious and famous of France. It is characterized mainly by "gôniots" Chalonnaise creating characters, kings of disguise ugly and burlesque; and its fun fair which hosts the largest and most innovative rides. Each year, over 10,000 visitors attend this genuine institution.

Traditionally, for the Pentecost weekend, the Hot Air Balloon festival brings together fifty balloons from all over Europe to fly Chalon and the Côte Chalonnaise.

But the city is famous for its cultural event "Chalon dans la Rue", which meets annually since 1986 in July, street theater artists, ready to show the richness of their creativity and talent to benefit Chalon public and visitors. This is one of the most important street show festivals organized in France, acclaimed around the hexagon and Europe.

Chalon is a city for the less athletic, with nearly 15,000 licensed and hundreds of clubs, hosted in structures such as the Colosseum, the sports center of the city. Internationally renowned organizations flourish, such as water circle Chalon first French amateur club swimming, with nearly 1,200 licensees; sports basketball club, "Elan", founded in 1970, which stands in the professional category since 1994, reaching the best French and European levels; or RCC, rugby club linked to the National League.

The city also stands in the environmental field. In 2002, Chalon was chosen as a pilot city to engage in the program PRIVILEGE (Cities Initiative Programme for Reducing Greenhouse Gas) signed with ADEME and the European Union. Not to mention that it also invests in bike paths and green spaces so popular with tourists and Chalon.

All of which makes Chalon a dynamic city where life is good, a leisure and conviviality.
