Père-Lachaise Cemetery

Paris' iconic Père-Lachaise Cemetery is not only the capital's biggest graveyard, at nearly 44 hectares, but also its most famous. This is the most visited cemetery in the world, and is named after the Confessor of King Louis XIV, François d'Aix de La Chaise. It indeed contains the tombs of such famous figures as Chopin, Molière, La Fontaine, Daudet and Musset, as well as Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, Édith Piaf, Simone Signoret, Yves Montand, Alain Bashung and Marie Trintignant, to name but a few.

Located in the 20th arrondissement, and accessible by Metro via the Père Lachaise, Gambetta and Philippe Auguste stations, Père-Lachaise Cemetery contains a great many funeral monuments and majestic graves that make this peaceful English-style garden a real outdoor sculpture museum! Wandering among the Haussmannian vaults, Antique mausoleums and Gothic tombs, don't forget to also pay a visit to the impressive monument to the dead by the sculptor Bartholomé, a listed Historic Monument.
