Ranked among the most beautiful villages in France, Baume-les-Messieurs is nestled in the Jura department, at the bottom of a circus surrounded by high cliffs. City of character of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, it takes place not far from Lons-le-Saunier, offering an impregnable view on the most famous remote of the area.
Occupied since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the traces of rock shelters found on site, the village of Baume-les-Messieurs developed from the beginning of the 10th century with the creation of a monastery dependent on the abbey of Cluny. Today, the city is mainly turned to a tourist and leisure activity.
Baume-les-Messieurs has indeed an incredible architectural and historical heritage that reflects the wealth of the municipality through the centuries.
Partly listed as an historic monument, Saint-Pierre Abbey is a former Benedictine abbey created at the end of the 9th century by the abbot Bernon, famous founder of Cluny Abbey. Romanesque and Gothic, it still unveils today buildings built at different times like the Romanesque church of the eleventh century, the courtyard of the cloister, the court of the canons of the eighteenth century, or the abbey court. The latter presents buildings with facades of the sixteenth century, as well as the abbey dwelling. The latter has a very beautiful vaulted room of the thirteenth century. The church has in its interior very beautiful statues of all origins, a Flemish altarpiece of the sixteenth century, or paintings of the seventeenth century.
While strolling in the city, do not miss to admire the chapel Notre-Dame, or the numerous crosses registered or classified with the Historical Monuments like those of the Peyrouse of the XVth century, of Pré Saint-Jean of the 16th century, or even of the 16th century Pois.
Listed historical monument, the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste is also not lacking interest, as the oratory of the Toupe and the oratory of the Champ du Bri.
Baume-les-Messieurs also features several 16th and 18th century farms, a 15th century manor, or 19th century bridges, all listed or listed. The old bridge on the Seille, of the thirteenth century, is also inscribed.
The circus, natural wonder classified Natura 2000, allows to admire a magnificent remote, the waterfall Tufs or very beautiful caves buried 120 meters underground. Concerts are organized throughout the year in the abbey or in the church.
In May, potters' markets are offered as part of the Imperial Abbey.
At the beginning of August, place at the Bowling Festival and its animations.
A Christmas market is proposed at the beginning of December in the abbey.
