Founded in the 5th century by hermits, then occupied until the 15th century by Benedictine monks, the Abbey of Saint Roman, perched on top of the Aiguille hill near Beaucaire, is remarkable for being entirely carved out of the rock. This troglodyte monastery is unique in Western Europe and has retained some remarkable relics from its past. These include the chapel, which holds the relics of Saint Roman, the cells, cisterns, cellars and open-air necropolis. From the upper terrace, where you can still see the ruins of a castle built in the 16th century then dismantled in the 19th century, the view of Provence and the Rhône valley is superb!
