Mediolanum Santonum, Saintes, was the capital of the Roman province of Aquitaine in the 1st century. Located on the Agrippa road that connected Saintes to Lyon, the city quickly developed and acquired all the attributes related to its importance and commercial vitality: amphitheatre, baths, temples, aqueducts, ramparts, road arches, etc. Even today, many buildings and remains can be found in and around the city.
