Lizieux Peak

Hikes & walks in Mazet-Saint-Voy

The Lizieux Peak is a phonolite mountain rising to an altitude of 1,388 m. It dominates a large basalt plateau and, every year, welcomes many cross-country skiers who come there to take advantage of the beautiful landscapes. At the foot of the Lizieux Peak, at Besset Farm, it is possible to hire cross-country skis and enjoy a dog-sled ride in the summer and winter.

To get there, make your way to the village of Mazet-Saint-Voy: continue towards Yssingeaux and just after the small wooden chalet manufacturer, turn left on to the D500. Drive for 8 km, at the hamlet of "Les Hostes", turn left on to the D7 towards "Foyer de ski de fond du Lizieux". After 1.3 km, turn left and take a road signposted "Pic du Lizieux". 600 m from the chalet, turn left on to the road and leave your car at the car park.

The signposting leading to the peak is almost non-existent. Therefore, note that you have to take the path which continues on from the car park's access path. After a few minutes of walking, take the first path on your right. You will find a wooded path, before starting the climb to the peak. Relatively steep, it requires good walking shoes because, in some places, it is covered with slippery stone waterfalls. At the top, your hard work is rewarded by a superb panoramic view (with orientation table) over the Lignon valley, with the Vivarais mountains to the east, and the Boutières chain and the Mézenc to the south, behind the last pélean volcano in the Auvergne volcano chain. Return to the starting point along the same route.
