Depart from the hamlet of Le Château, at an altitude of 702 m. Climb up to the village of Galey, then continue along the small road on the southern side of the valley towards the Horque Pass (908 m) and Escarchein, being sure to take advantage of the view over the French Pyrenees. Continue along the Way of Saint James GR 78 path, through the beech forest towards Portet-d'Aspet (850 m). Take a break at the Bistrot de Pays, then return via the beech forest on the northern side of the valley, past the villages of Saint-Lary (687 m) and Augirein (629 m), before the final climb up to the starting point.
From the hamlet of Le Château, about a two-hour walk is needed to get to Portet-d'Aspet via Galey, the Hourque Pass and Escarchein. The first 90 minutes follow a small road, the D304b, with a magnificent view over the surrounding mountains. Then, from the Hourque Pass, take the GR 78 that will lead through a beech forest to the village of Portet-d'Aspet. For refreshments, you can enjoy a break at the Bistrot de Pays. Continue the walk, about 2 hours, following the signposting in the opposite direction from where you entered the village. Climb up the farm path into the woods, then descend to the village of Saint-Lary (restaurant and bar in the village). Cross the river and continue, keeping the grocer's shop on the right. Follow the path to Augirein (50 minutes). Cross the D618 road and continue along the GR 78 to return to the start of the walk, at the hamlet of Le Château.
