Dombes is naturally conjugated in the plural. The number of 1000 for the ponds and the number 3 for the specificities of the territory: birds, carp and horses. A trilogy rooted in the beautiful history of the Dombes! Sensitive and subtle ecosystem, the territory of the Dombes is a blessed land for birds. 130 species come to feed, shelter and reproduce, some very rare such as the white stilt or the net russet... Between October and April, thousands of milouins, teals, shovels and ducks come to take refuge in the rushes and reedbeds of ponds. In the 13th century, the creation of the Dombes ponds favored the development of fish farming. The Dombes still remains today the first freshwater fishing region of France with each year more than 1000 tons of fish caught in a traditional way. Carp represents 60 to 65% of this production. The breeding of saddle horses has also for a long time occupied an important place in the economy of the territory and still keeps the Dombes in the second rank of the French regions of breeding.
