Bresse poultry, famous for the quality of its flesh and incomparable flavour, is the only poultry to have been awarded an Appellation of Controlled Origin. Just like the fatted chicken, capon and turkey from Bresse, the famous Bresse chicken, with its white feathers, red comb and blue feet, is reared outdoors - in the fields of Bresse - and fed on cereal and dairy products.
The Glorieuses de Bresse, a prestigious fine poultry contest that celebrates Bresse poultry, takes place each year in mid-December, in Bourg-en-Bresse, Louhans, Montrevel-en-Bresse and Pont-de-Vaux. Once the prizes have been awarded, the birds are sold to the public.
In Louhans, in the Saône-et-Loire, the traditional poultry market takes place every Monday morning.
Lovers of traditional dishes should be sure to try the famous Bresse chicken with cream, the jewel in the crown of Bressan gastronomy!
