The Bonnotte de Noirmoutier is an old, early variety of potato originating in Barfleur, in the department of Manche. It was introduced to the island of Noirmoutier in the 1920s.
This small, round, firm potato grows in sandy soil enriched with kelp, giving it its distinctive aroma. Available in May, it has a pleasant salty flavour that makes it the ideal accompaniment to shellfish, fish or meat in a salt crust.
As it's particularly fragile, the Bonnotte de Noirmoutier can only be picked by hand. It has many health-giving properties and its high starch content is particularly appreciated for its anti-cholesterol benefits.
Every year in May, the island of Noirmoutier hosts a Bonnotte festival during which you can enjoy activities like old-style potato-picking, or attend a dinner and music show.
