Renowed all over Europe, the Alpes de Haute-Durance apple is full of charm and flavour! It is a cross between Golden Delicious and Gala varieties, which gives it a pleasant, sweet taste. The 300 days of sunshine enjoyed by the region every year also promotes the inner tenderness and crispy, firm texture of this very special apple.

Since 2010, the Alpes de Haute-Durance apple has been carried a PGI, meaning it can only be produced in six cantons in Alpes-de Haute-Provence, and thirteen cantons in Hautes-Alpes. At the moment there are nearly 170 producers growing it, resulting in around 100,000 tonnes of apples per year.

Every year, an apple festival is organised in October in Sisteron, in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. It provides a chance to learn a bit more about this fruit which has been grown in the region for centuries, and rose to prominence in the 1930s.
