Vix

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Côte-d'Or

Vix is a commune of Côte-d'Or, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, 8 km north of Chatillon-sur-Seine.

Crossed by the course of the Seine before the river heads towards Aube, the territory of the locality, certainly modest in area (3.5 km²), presents a contrasted landscape. The village is dominated by Mount Lassois which rises to 306 m above sea level, and on the right bank of the Seine, several sand pits formed bodies of water.

Vix, which has only about 110 inhabitants, is famous for archaeological excavations that have uncovered important treasures (including the Vix vase from the 5th century BC) attesting to the human presence since the Iron Age and later a Celtic palace at the level of Mt.

Still inhabited in ancient times, the site still develops in the Middle Ages and the village is transformed into the religious capital of the Châtillonais.

It remains of this past a rich heritage all the more valued as Mount Lassois, the visitor enjoys remarkable points of view.

A stage of interest during a stay in the region, between Burgundy and Champagne.

Things to see and do

If the archaeological treasures found on the town are for the most remarkable preserved in the museum of Châtillon-sur-Seine (as the monumental vase in bronze - in this case, a funerary urn of 1.60 m high - which was housed in the burial of a Celtic princess having lived in the fifth century BC), one can still observe at Vix vestiges of the ancient oppidum or the Celtic palace.

Many panels are available to visitors who can understand "in situ" how evolved, from the Iron Age in the Middle Ages, the physiognomy of the locality nestled at the foot of Mount Lassois, in a loop of the Seine.

A sculpture also recalls, in the village, the outsized dimensions of the "vase" and a monument pays homage to the inventor of the archaeological site, in 1953, Maurice Moisson.

See next, the Church of St. Marcel, dating from the twelfth century, which was the heart of a Benedictine priory established at the same time, the whole having replaced a Carolingian place of worship and a Merovingian cemetery. In Romanesque style, the church has a central nave vaulted with warped cradles, and its plan is that of a Latin cross. The choir and the transept were rebuilt in the 16th century. The church is classified as a historical monument.

A bridge with three arches, in stone, spanning the Seine, built in the nineteenth century (listed in the inventory), several crosses, including on the way to the Mount, or a beautiful laundry, the nineteenth, are also to observe in the commune.

Two hiking trails allow you to join "stroll" and "discovery of heritage" to approach the site of Mount Lassois, at the top of which information tables have been developed. There are remarkable views of the Seine and the plain.

Other circuits invite to follow the river and to reach the city of Châtillon a few kilometers. Maps and information on +33 3 80 63 69 49.

As for the fishermen, they obviously have enough to satisfy their passion, at the level of the river, of its small tributaries like bodies of water which line out the banks. Find out about the regulations on +33 3 80 57 11 15.
