Vix is a town of around 1,800 inhabitants located in the south-east of Vendée, in the heart of the Marais Poitevin, on the border between Deux-Sèvres and Charente-Maritime.
In the 11th century, Vix was an island in the Gulf of Pictons covered by the sea. The creation of the Maillezais abbey and the arrival of the monks contributed to the modification of the landscape. The swamp has been drained to make the land suitable for cultivation.
Vix had since the 12th century a Romanesque church, Notre-Dame de l'Assomption. Wars, political quarrels, lack of maintenance and the storm of 1972 got the better of this building. A resolutely modern church was built in 1974 on the site of the old one.
From the old church have been preserved, in addition to the apse and the bells (visible in the stripped bell tower), the polychrome wooden crucifix from the beginning of the 17th century, the statue of Our Lady of the Assumption, patron saint of the church dating from the end of the 19th century, one of the confessionals from 1912 and the Stations of the Cross.
Among its inhabitants, there is Gaston Chaissac French painter and poet (1910-1964)
On the territory of Vizeron, the family business Mercier has been established since 1890, world leader in the production of vine plants and the creation of vineyards. Mercier Frères also produces quality wine.
The Piver association brings back to life in July and August the traditional folklore of Vix, dances, meals, fishing trips.
