Vitteaux is a commune in the Côte-d'Or, in Burgundy, Franche-Comte, 45 km northwest of Dijon.
The 20 km² territory of the village belongs to the natural region of Auxois and range from 304 to 513 m.
The village is located along the course of the Brenne, dominated by wooded plateaus. The surrounding countryside is however made up of crops and meadows dedicated to breeding.
The first traces of human occupation dating back to the Neolithic, the camp site Myard, which dominates the west of the existing town. Houses there were then protected by a wall. It seems that this original village was destroyed by fire towards - 2500 BC.
The village meanwhile developed from the tenth century around a first church dependent monastery of Flavigny. Then Vitteaux becomes a lordship under the dukes of Burgundy and acquires a certain prosperity.
Witness a rich heritage of old houses and the remains of the old feudal castle. The village of about 1100 inhabitants has therefore retained an authentic character and even picturesque. A leisure offer quality and a green environment complete this panorama, Vitteaux revealing a pleasant stop during a stay in Burgundy.
A discovery tour of the town and its remarkable heritage was designed and logically begins with the tourist office, housed in a beautiful half-timbered house of the fourteenth century, the courtyard is just as characteristic of the Middle Ages (turret stairs, gallery).
See then close the Decailly house and its Renaissance door dated 1556, an octagonal tower that housed a staircase leading to the now extinct houses, home to the Pillars, with a cantilevered floor (XV) and even home Bélime, whose origins date back to the thirteenth century, we see his twin windows with lintels.
The tour then goes through the halls built in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, renovated in the seventeenth, which function warehouse today. Note still Ferrand hotel, a house of the sixteenth century that the cantilever is supported by pillars decorated with carved heads, the Trinity Chapel (XVI) and Piget hotel, which reworked elements in the seventeenth century enclose a court. Street side, however, a timbered gallery dates from the sixteenth century.
It then goes to the site of the former feudal castle: a watchtower, the old part of ditches dug into the rock, the former chapel of the fifteenth century, the well and the entrance marked by the bases of two towers round are still visible. Note also that a wine house was built later, leaning against one of the towers.
On the way down, it is this time the testimonies of the ancient fortifications of the city itself are visible (porch tower, wall).
Following this walk is marked by the former convent of the Minimes (XVII), which also served as a warehouse for wheat, then housed a spinning College before being bought by the city hospital, which dates to the essential 1750.
The town hall built in the nineteenth century on the foundations of the old Ursuline Convent, oven built by school children to bake a giant cake that figured in the record books are to be seen then, before the course is not completed by church Saint-Germain, founded in the eleventh century and rebuilt from the following century to house a relic of the saint. Note the Gothic portal with leaves (XIII), its steeple twisted to look twisted and inside, an altarpiece from 1592. The church finally has a crypt accessed only during Heritage Days.
To visit during the day, the center of the town is also rediscover evening, when then commissioned the shadows and lights courses designed by the artist Christian Boltanski in 2004: the streets and houses are then animated by fugitive silhouettes.
