Vitry-en-Perthois is a charming little town of the Marne which was important in the Middle Ages because it was a seigneury and an important bailliage for the counts of Troyes. It was once called Vitry-le-Brûlé after being completely destroyed by fire, first by the army of Louis VII in 1143 then in 1544 by the army of Charles V. The municipality suffered enormous damage in September 1914 and during the Second World War because of its proximity to Vitry-le-François, a major railway station on the Paris-Strasbourg line.
