New town of the Ardennes, in the Grand Est region, Bazeilles takes place about thirty kilometers from Charleville-Mézières, not far from Givonne, Thelonne and Haraucourt. It was born on January 1, 2017 from the merger of Rubécourt-et-Lamécourt, Villers-Cernay and the former municipality of Bazeilles.

If the territory has had a relatively peaceful history over the centuries, gradually forging the face that we know today, Bazeilles however experienced its heyday on September 1, 1870. On this date, the town was the scene of a heroic battle between the porpoises of the Blue Division and the Bavarians.

Today, Bazeilles has regained its calm and charm, attracting passing visitors with its rich architectural heritage as well as its proximity to some of the most beautiful cities in the region.

Things to see and do

Chief town of the new town, Bazeilles seduced by the richness of its heritage. It is difficult to resist the Saint-Martin church, rebuilt in the 19th century following the horrors of the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. Neo-Gothic in style, it offers beautiful stained glass windows of Art Nouveau inspiration. To learn a little more about the history of Bazeilles, head to the House of the last cartridge, a museum located on the site of the eponymous battle. In particular, we discover a museum of French Marine Troops. The town also offers the French and Prussian monument-ossuary in the town cemetery.

Listed as an historic monument and built in the middle of the 18th century, the Orival castle still unveils an orangery, a dovecote, a park or even a fabulous wrought iron gate. Other castles also take place on the territory of the city, like those of Montvilliers which serves as a training ground for the Sedan football club, and Turenne. The latter only presents vestiges, with in particular a portal classified as Historical Monuments.

The Château de Lamécourt, listed as a Historic Monument, is the main tourist attraction in Rubécourt-et-Lamécourt. Former fortified castle surrounded by bodies of water and a park, it still has two square towers and a building transformed in the neo-Gothic style. Attested since the 16th century, in its time it hosted a temple for the Reformed religion. Do not miss to admire the Saint-Rémi church or the old spinning mill, witness of the old industry of the town.

In Villers-Cernay, the Saint-Pierre church is not without interest.
