In the heart of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, in the Gard, the Museum Pierre de Luxembourg takes place in a mansion in the city built in the fourteenth century at the request of Cardinal Caetani Hannibal Ceccano. Deeply changed in the second half of the seventeenth century, the building classified historic monument since 1986 hosts the collections of Pierre de Luxembourg museum.
These reveal mainly works from the religious institutions of the city, including an important collection of paintings of the seventeenth century from the monastery of Our Lady of the Val de Benediction.
Inside, it is possible to admire two masterpieces from the Middle Ages: the Virgin of the fourteenth century ivory carved from an elephant tusk and the Coronation of the Virgin of Enguerrand Quarton. Made in the mid-fifteenth century, this work was originally installed above the altar of the Chapel of the Holy Trinity monastery of Notre-Dame du Val de Benediction.
