Villenauxe-la-Grande

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Aube

Commune of Aube, Grand Est region, Villenauxe-la-Grande is located on the edge of the Seine-et-Marne and Marne, between Brie and Champagne. It takes place about sixty kilometers from Troyes, and is the first city of the Champagne route.

The old Villonisa was born in the Gallo-Roman era, but really developed from the sixteenth century following the royal authorization of Francis I to fortify the city. Long under the influence of the Augustinians and Benedictines of the abbey of Nesle-la-Reposte, it becomes a seigniorial residence in the seventeenth century. The viticultural town suffers a decline of its activity in the nineteenth century, before turning to tourism thanks to its rich cultural and architectural heritage.

Even today, Villenauxe-la-Grande seduces passing visitors with its wine, its landscapes and its authentic charm.

Things to see and do

Listed as a Historical Monument, the Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul Church dates from the 13th century. Without transept, it presents a collateral girded with the choir as well as a tower of XVIe century. Until the eighteenth century, the building housed shops in its foothills. A German bombardment in 1940 caused him to lose all his stained glass windows, replaced and inaugurated in the early 2000s. It is thus possible to appreciate contemporary stained glass windows.

The church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur is listed as a historic monument. It presents a fifteenth century choir and elements remodeled in the sixteenth and eighteenth century. Abandoned after the Second World War and restored in the late 1970s, it is now used as a cultural center.

Founded in 2007, the Ecomuseum of Ceramics and Clay Mine reveals the economic past of the city through photos, films, tools, ancient ceramics and mussels.

While strolling in the city, do not miss to admire the house of the XVIIe century located at 44 rue du Perrey, it is the subject of a partial inscription to the Historical Monuments.
