Rocanadel Castle is located in the town of Veyrignac, in the Dordogne department, 18 km south-east of Sarlat-la-Canéda.
Located to the south-east of the town, it was originally a noble lair (a defensive fortified house where the population took refuge during troubles) which depended on the lords of Domme in the 14th century.
The whole was remodeled in the 15th and 16th centuries. Thus, are still observable ramparts in ruins adjoined by a round defense tower. In addition, the remains of the castle also include elements of a main building with a central square tower dating from the 16th century and a large round corner tower with corbels (stone supports protruding) from the 15th century. A Renaissance entrance door and fireplaces are also mentioned.
These remains adjoin (for some) or have been integrated (for others) into a new opulent residence, fitted out in a green setting, on the left bank of the course of the Dordogne.
These remains justify the site being included in the Inventory.
However, private property is not open to the public. The old castle (which a legend claims was connected by underground passages to the castle of Milhac, several kilometers to the south, in the Lot) can however punctuate a walk in a bucolic environment.
