Versailles' rich historical heritage makes it an unmissable destination in the department of Yvelines. The famous Palace of Versailles, surrounded by its majestic gardens designed by André le Nôtre, is top of the bill of course, but the town also has other gems that it would be a shame to miss.

As you explore its old neighbourhoods, you'll discover all the architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries in all its refinement. In the Vieux-Versailles district, the historic heart of the town, you'll be dazzled by the many prestigious monuments, such as the Recollects convent, the former Foreign Affairs and Navy building, now the municipal library, the Grand Commun, which housed the kitchens under Louis XIV, and the Royal Tennis Court, an emblematic site of the French Revolution.

In the Saint-Louis quarter, you'll discover the superb Cathedral of St. Louis and its period paintings, the King's Kitchen Garden and its nine hectares, and the Carrés Saint-Louis, a group of small houses dating back to the time of Louis XV. With its fifty or so antique shops, the Antiquaires quarter is the place for lovers of vintage items, and is also where you can pay a visit to the Lambinet Museum, devoted to art and the history of the town. In the Notre-Dame quarter, the oldest part of Versailles, stands the unmissable church of the same name, built from 1743 onwards by Jacques Hardouin-Mansart de Sagonne. It's not far from the Montansier Theatre, an 18th-century Italian-style theatre, and the Carrés Notre-Dame, where a well-known market is held every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday morning. Near the palace, the Garden and the Court of Scents will delight your senses, with businesses and shops specialising in the decorative arts, tableware and gastronomy.

The list goes on! Amongst other treasures, must-sees include the prestigious riding school of the National Equestrian Academy of the Estate of Versailles, the Gallery of Coaches, Balbi Park and Madame Élisabeth's Estate, once home to Louis XVI's younger sister, as well as the cobbled streets of the Montbauron quarter and the village charm of the Montreuil quarter.

On top of all these attractions, Versailles is also a green town, with green spaces covering half of its surface area, and a cultural town that hosts all kinds of events all year round (exhibitions, concerts, theatre performances...).
