Varengeville-sur-Mer is a coastal town in Seine-Maritime in region Normandy, 5 km west of Dieppe.
In the Caux country, its territory of 10 km² was occupied very early: the flints were unearthed, showing a human presence BCE. Then, like other localities of the coast, the village experienced the Roman invasions and Norman. The monks of the Abbey of Conches erect there a church in the twelfth century, with its marine cemetery, remains an exceptional site, all appearing as on the cliff.
The village rich of an exceptional heritage (manors, museums, remarkable gardens) becomes residential in the nineteenth century and many artists (such as Monet, who immortalized in several paintings) and poets like staying there.
Its charm has remained intact. It holds its preserved environment and a valleuse (gap) carved into a cliff that provides access to the sea.
Varengeville-sur-Mer with a thousand inhabitants proves a necessary step during a stay on the Alabaster Coast near other major attractions and famous ports such as Dieppe Etretat north or south...
Among the jewels of the village of Saint-Valéry church erected on the cliff top of Ailly obviously worth a visit. Among gardens and trees, overlooking the sea, it was built in the twelfth century. It has two naves: north, built in flint, the oldest (XII and XIII) has a Romanesque structure. The second, Gothic, so later, was built in sandstone. It seems that the shipowner Jean Ango has financed this expansion. The porch was also built in the sixteenth century. Inside, separating the nave, a polygonal pillar columnar is richly carved. However, we especially admire the stained glass windows made by major contemporary artists such as Georges Braque and Raoul Ubac, statues, a lying, or a modern painting by Michel Ciry.
As for the cemetery that surrounds the building (except at the building), named the "sea" in the early twentieth century in analogy to the cemetery in Sète, it houses including the tomb of Georges Braque, in love with this town...
The entire site is protected, as is the nearest house (villa Palette, twentieth century, and his garden), and is the subject of consolidation work. Church and cemetery are open to the public every day free of charge.
See then, the manor of Ango, historical monument in 1862. Built between 1530 and 1542 by Jean Ango, Dieppe shipowner powerful and close adviser to François I, the manor combines Florentine styles and Norman revealing a fine example of architecture Renaissance. The main building (part of which includes a loggia decorated with frescoes whose floor is used as a reception room) has facades decorated with medallions depicting the king his emblem (a salamander) or Jean Ango and his wife. With dependencies, it forms a courtyard. The set also applies to the wonderful dovecote (it could house up to 3,200 pigeons symbolizing the wealth of the owner) decorated with a polychrome brick, flint and sandstone. According to legend, Jean Ango loved for his garden contemplating the comings and goings of boats leaving or arriving on Dieppe. Number of visitors and famous guests at the manor, as the poets André Breton and Louis Aragon between the wars. Restored, the mansion has regained its luster and now hosts including receptions. It is open to visitors every day from May to September and on weekends and public holidays in April and October. Price: 5.50 euros. Information +33 6 60 39 01 94.
We continue visiting the village and its treasures from the museum dedicated to Michel Ciry (1919-2018) recently opened dedicated to the works of the painter, engraver, writer and composer who settled in the village in 1960. open from May to September every day from 14h to 18h except Tuesday weekends in April and October until Halloween. Price: 3 and 5 euros. Information +33 2 32 90 01 52.
Varengeville-sur-Mer that also frequented Proust, Renoir and Prevert (non-exhaustive list!) Is also true for its beautiful gardens. Like that of Shamrock, which has the largest collection in the world of hydrangeas and hydrangeas (some from China and Japan). There are at total of 1,500 different varieties. His visit is a delight and a change of scenery marked by shadows and lights in the aisles. A labyrinth was built for children. Open every day except Tuesday morning from 15 June to 30 September. Price: 8 and 9 euros. Information at +33 2 35 85 14 64.
Also labeled Remarkable Garden, the wood of Moutiers was created in 1898 around a mansion built by an English architect in the Arts and Crafts style (literally "Arts and Crafts"), which gave birth to the Modern Style (British during the Art Nouveau). The area also protected as historical monuments covers 12 hectares and the park rich in magnolias, azaleas and rhododendrons is composed of two parts: English-style landscaped gardens, and a space overlooking the sea surrounding the mansion. The property was recently acquired and is being restored. The site is now closed to the public. The reopening date is not known. Information +33 2 32 14 40 60.
Remains the natural heritage of the town which is also the subject of protection for its fauna and flora, in anticipation of a possible inclusion in the World Heritage of UNESCO like other cliffs of the coast... We thus appreciate the valleuse that provides access to the beach Petit Ailly (possible bathing or lazing on the sand, overlooking Dieppe) or protected areas inland.
What consider beautiful hikes possibly including raids on neighboring communities. Maps and information +33 2 32 14 40 60.
The last Sunday of April, plants festivities at the Shamrock garden.
In early August, classical music concert in the Normandy Festival.
[Exposition Photo] Vogue au Creux des Valleuses · Raphaëlle Peria
- From 23 march to 16 june 2024
- Musée Michel Ciry
- There's no river to be seen in Varengeville. Yet water is everywhere. It seeps into the rock, circulates beneath our feet, cuts into the cliffs to form valleys, ebbs and flows with the tides. The sea licks the cliffs to melt the stone. The water that rises in the form of pools with a thousand reflections. - It is this omnipresence of water that Raphaëlle Peria tackles through an original body of work combining scratched photographs, engraved gold leaf and ceramics. She invites us to reflect on water as a source of life, vegetation and light, but also on the destructive water that nibbles away at our landscapes. Our memories of places are altered by this ceaseless ballet. The artist's gesture of scratching reminds us of the erosion of these lands. Several monumental works plunge us life-size into the heart of this process. - This exhibition is co-curated by Fanny Robin, Artistic Director of the Bullukian Foundation.

But in the shadow of her work, Juliette is petrified. And then there's Benimar, an enigmatic doctor with a dark past, fleeing by day and praying by night. These three wounded souls meet without seeing each other, when the improbable knocks on their door. Estelle, Juliette and Benimar unite their solitudes to face the past and illuminate their future.
