Abbey of Valmont

Monument in Valmont

Benedictine abbey located in the heart of Seine-Maritime, in Normandy, the abbey of Valmont, formerly called Sainte-Marie de Valmont, is now classified as a Historic Monument for its magnificent Renaissance architecture.

Founded in the 12th century by Nicolas d'Estouteville, it was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt until the 17th century. From the original site, it is still possible to discover the axial chapel of the abbey, the only vestige of the important church that once stood here and whose nave collapsed in the 18th century. Visitors can admire the tombs, recumbent figures and funerary slabs of the former lords of Estouteville. The magnificent stained-glass windows from the 16th century retrace the life of the Blessed Virgin.

Of the abbey there are now only the ruins of the 16th century choir and the ambulatory.
