The Toulon Art Museum which houses the city's artistic collections was inaugurated in 1888 in a neo-Renaissance building designed for this purpose.
Following a U-shaped plan, the facades are decorated with sculptures, and loggias on the ground floor and upstairs make it possible to flood the galleries with light.
The collection has grown over the decades (which led to the departure from the site of the archaeological museum).
It includes works by Provencal painters from the 14th to the 20th century, whose paintings mainly represent landscapes.
Beginning in the 1970s, the museum acquired a large collection of contemporary art. Works (paintings, sculptures and even installations) by Arman, César, Christo, Yves Klein, Daniel Buren, in particular, are thus preserved. New trends in American art have not been forgotten. In addition, a number of 20th century photographers are also in the spotlight, such as Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson or Willy Ronis.
Finally, it should be noted that bequests from individuals have made it possible to constitute a collection of Asian art which is now presented at the Villa Jules Verne.
At the museum itself, the collections are presented on a rotating basis, and temporary exhibitions complete the rich annual program.
