Things to see and do

Ancient city, Tonnay-Charente still possesses a significant number of historical monuments that attract visitors.

Built in the late eleventh century, the Saint-Etienne church was rebuilt in the late sixteenth century following the destruction of the religious wars. However, you can still admire a portal, the only remains of the Romanesque period. In the nineteenth century the building became neoclassical with Doric columns. Opposite the church, the priestly house, over two floors, was built in the 1830s.

Of medieval origin, the castle of Rochechouart-Mortemart was built on the remains of a Carolingian castle. The present building dates from the early eighteenth century and also of the French park.

Classified as an historic monument, the suspension bridge is a structure dating back to 1842. Rebuilt in 1883, then in 1934 with metal pylons facility, it is the emblem of the city of Tonnay-Charente. Walking through the town, one can also enjoy the town hall dating from the July Monarchy, or the old covered stone cutting and Neoclassical style.

In the upper town, the mansions of the eighteenth century abound, proudly overlooking the river. We can also admire the homes of neoclassical style of the nineteenth century. Tonnay-Charente around the castles of the seventeenth century are galore in the country.
