Tigery is a commune in the Essonne department, in the Île-de-France region, 7 km northeast of Corbeil-Essonnes.
Its territory of 8.6 km² crossed by the Hauldres stream, a tributary of the Seine, is covered to the north by part of the vast national forest of Sénart (3200 hectares). To the south, the village, which has become a small town, is still surrounded by agricultural land.
Already occupied during Gallo-Roman antiquity, the hamlet came under the county of Corbeil from the 10th century and from 1385, the lords of Tigery who descended from Gilles Malet became the same Viscounts of Corbeil. During the Middle Ages and then the Ancien Régime, the village was located in an agriculturally fertile region which is renowned as one of the "granaries of Paris".
In the 19th century, Tigery welcomed a new population who came to work on the farms and industrial sites of neighboring municipalities. However, it was not until the 1990s that urban and demographic growth really took hold. Over the past 30 years, the municipal population has quadrupled and there are now nearly 4,500 inhabitants. The historical and environmental heritage of Tigery as well as its cultural and "nature" leisure offer deserve attention during a stay in Île-de-France.
In terms of heritage, if no parish church is located in the town, several sites however deserve to be mentioned.
The first is the "Grand Château", to the east of the village. It is originally a feudal castle dating from the Middle Ages. All that remains of it are vestiges such as elements of the moats, the bases of certain towers, or even vaulted cellars. During the Renaissance, the building was remodeled (as evidenced by the towers or sculpted decorative elements) and it was again deeply modernized in the 17th century in a classical style. Additions were finally made in the 19th century. It now takes the form of a vast quadrilateral raised on three levels with an interior courtyard and adjoining buildings. From 1929 to 1984, the religious congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame du Cénacle had its novitiate there. In 1931, a chapel was erected and until 1965, a private primary school was held there by the sisters. Finally, since 1984, the castle has been the seat of the Chemin Neuf community where around thirty religious live. Retreats are offered to lay people and the public is admitted from time to time. Otherwise, the vast domain is clearly visible from the outside. Information on +33 1 60 75 40 90.
Another site of interest is the Château du Petit Sénart, to the south-west of the town, which has housed a Therapeutic, Educational and Pedagogical Institute (ITEP) since the 1960s. The building, made up of a main building with neo-classical architecture, can be observed from the street…
The locality also demonstrates a notable cultural dynamism. Readings, conferences or exhibitions are thus offered at the media library: contact +33 1 64 85 16 33. a team also in charge of the Théâtre de Corbeil-Essonnes. The Silo can accommodate some 300 spectators: there are plays, one-man shows (humor is one of the strong points of the program) and contemporary music concerts. Information on +33 1 69 22 56 19.
On the sport side, over ten hectares, the Coulée verte to the east of the town is certainly a space where you can walk in a green setting. But there are also a city stadium and a skate park. Are also accessible on the locality of football fields, tennis courts (to be reserved with the club on +33 6 63 79 10 25).
It should also be noted that the lake in the northwest of the territory, classified as a sensitive area, is laid out for walking and includes a "fitness trail".
Finally, there is the forest of Sénart to enjoy, over 3200 hectares maintained by the National Forestry Office and which are crossed by paths and alleys. Near the limit of the town, the center of Le Faisanderie (a former 18th century hunting lodge) is made available to the ONF, which offers themed hikes to discover the rich ecosystem, exhibitions, activities for young audiences: contact on +33 1 60 75 54 17.
Mountain bikers are also welcome.
