Talence is a city in south -western France, in the southern suburbs of Bordeaux. It is the fourth largest city in the department of Gironde after Bordeaux, Merignac Pessac. The inhabitants are Talençais.
City Talence houses the College of Science and Technology of the University of Bordeaux (formerly Bordeaux 1 University) and many schools, engineering schools ( Arts et Métiers ParisTech, NCSS, ENSEIRB- MMK, Sup - Ago -Bordeaux Institute optical Aquitaine ), business schools ( Bordeaux school of Management and Architecture ( ENSAP ).
Common urban area located in the Bordeaux urban area south of Bordeaux, it is part of the first belt.
The territory of the present city of Talence was long covered with forests which were scattered hamlets. The presence of these forests would be the origin of the name " Talence ". The latter effect would be derived from the word " Tala " which means " chopping wood ". This is the 13th century that names like " Talanssa ", " Talencia ", " Talancé ".
The real stand Talence, which was constantly a devastated place ( looting and devastation caused by constant wars ), 17th century. The proximity of Bordeaux and the presence of three major trade routes become safer ( roads Bayonne, Toulouse and Tests ) attracted the rich bourgeois of Bordeaux. Many bourgeois Bordeaux built their castles and magnificent houses Talence. Thus the banker Samuel Charles Peixotto will build what later became the mayor of the city. In 1783 a Portuguese family of exiles fleeing the Inquisition, the Raba, entrust Victor Louis, the architect of the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, the construction of a dwelling and the construction of a park whose reputation exceeds boundaries of the municipality.
However Talence retain its rural vocation. It was not until the late 19th century and during the 20th century Talence says its urban character and will see the development of many industrial activities : food metallurgy, fabrication, chemicals, slaughterhouses, avionics, shoes, ( biscuit chocolate... ).
From the years 1970-1980, these industries will disappear or relocate to other areas of the Urban Community of Bordeaux to make way for residential buildings. One of the latest is from Cardboard France.
