The zoological museum of Strasbourg was founded in 1804 after the city took over the collections of the naturalist Jean Hermann (1738-1800).
Located near the historic campus, long managed by academics, the zoological museum has joined the network of municipal museums.
In addition to Jean Hermann's cabinet, reconstructed identically, the collection of collections which are growing regularly includes more than a million invertebrates, more than 810,000 insects, 18,000 birds, 10,000 mammals, 5,000 fish and over a thousand reptiles.
The animals that make up the fauna of the Alsatian region are particularly highlighted. Naturalized or preserved using different techniques, the animals (some having disappeared) are presented in their original environment (like that of the poles for polar bears, etc.).
Temporary exhibitions, activities for all ages and educational workshops are offered throughout the year. A rich library is also accessible.
The establishment has been closed since 2019 and is due to reopen in 2023 or 2024 after a major museum redevelopment project.
