The Oppidum de Beriquaut is THE hike to take during a visit to Sorèze or the area. In addition to being an open summit offering a magnificent viewpoint, the site is also archaeological. Traces of habitat have been identified from prehistoric times (-30,000), from the Celtic, Gallo-Roman times and the Middle Ages. This is where the local population takes refuge in times of insecurity. It is this population that will settle against a new abbey to give birth to Sorèze or migrate into the Sor valley south of the oppidum to form Durfort.
View of Sorèze, Lake Saint-Ferréol, the Lauragais plain and the Montagne Noire.
