The castle of Sigy-le-Châtel is located in the town of the same name, in Saône-et-Loire, 18 km northwest of Cluny.
Located on a spur dominating a pass on which it was built, the castle is considered to be one of the oldest in the region, its original elements dating from the 10th and 11th centuries.
Its first lord was the lord of Bourbon then it passed to the lords of Luzy, the estate being rebuilt in the 12th century. Several noble families subsequently owned it until the Revolution.
Now in the state of vestiges, it once included a main building overlooking a plateau to the north, its fortified facade being equipped with semi-cylindrical towers pierced with gunboats. A watchtower was attached to the main building.
In the Middle Ages, the building still had a chapel: capitals of this were found in 1975 in a house in the village.
The remains of the castle are held by private owners and cannot be visited, but the site hosts a theater festival every last weekend of August.
Perched on the heights of the locality from which one enjoys a magnificent panoramic view, the castle even as a vestige still presents some nobility in a romantic environment.
Apart from the summer festival, the site can mark out a walk.
