A few meters from the cathedral, the Hotel de Vermandois is one of the rare examples of urban civil architecture of the mid-twelfth century in northern France. At the time of its construction, the grandees of the kingdom and their suite reside at Senlis. Raoul de Vermandois, grandson of the capétien Henri Ier, first cousin and chancellor of Louis VI and Louis VII, built this hotel. Despite its modest size, the house is designed in the image of the royal palace of Louis VI located in its immediate vicinity. Backed by the Gallo-Roman wall, it consists of a main building with four levels (basement, ground floor, 1st floor and attic). Restructuring took place in the sixteenth century, with the creation of intermediate levels that lead to the installation of a staircase housed in the turret brick and stone. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the hotel still undergoes transformations. Sold as a national property in 1791, it was acquired by the city of Senlis in 1819. In 1822, the Brothers of the Christian Schools settled there, and in 1832 a school occupied it. At the end of the 19th century, an additional wing, which joins the chapter house of the cathedral, is built behind the main building. In 1922, the Mortgage Retention took possession of the premises with a lease from the City, which reinstated it from 1977 to make it a museum.

The municipal museum is then cramped in the Hotel du Haubergier and requires additional space. The collections presented to Vermandois come from and are attached to it administratively. They evoke the past of Senlis through various works (archaeological material, silverware, liturgical objects, paintings, engravings, lapidary elements of the Notre-Dame cathedral and the Saint-Maurice priory). Two audiovisuals accompany the presentation, one tells the story of the city, the other is dedicated to the west portal of the cathedral. The museum also hosts exhibitions organized by the museums of Senlis. It has been closed since 2007 because of the work done at the Episcopal Palace.

The south facade, the turret and the roof are listed as Historic Monuments by order of May 1, 1933, the Gallo-Roman tower is classified by order of July 20, 1942.
