The Domaine de Valgenceuse is located in the town of Senlis, in the department of Oise.
Located on the edge of the Cours de la Nonette, it includes a castle (with an orangery) dating from the end of the 18th century, in neo-classical style, and an 8-hectare park laid out from the 17th century. Indeed, while the estate was owned by Jean Crochet, adviser to the Prince of Condé, the work on the park would have been entrusted to Le Nôtre.
The whole is structured by a 900 meter driveway with the layout of terraces and water features. In the 19th century, alterations were made to give the site a romantic atmosphere (creation of islands, bridges, planting of chestnut trees and priority given to curved shapes). However, the classic base has been preserved.
We appreciate the alliance of age-old plants (boxwood, ash, maple), lime trees that make up the main driveway, the presence of fruit trees such as orange, pear or peach trees with the rose garden and the built elements (facades, terraces, statues, dovecote…).
In the 19th century, the park was regularly visited by prominent writers such as Alfred de Vigny, Alexandre Dumas father and son, Gérard de Nerval…
The site is now labeled Remarkable Garden.
